From Llangeithio climb
up the B4342 towards Stag’s Head then turn left along a lane leading to Birch
Hill. A path on the right follows a well
marked route to Gwyrdy Farm where the road is rejoined. Turn left to Stag’s Head then right onto the
B4578, the original course of Sarn Helen, and stay on the road for over a mile
until it joins the A485. Turn right
towards Llanio and take a track just before a house on the left. This curves round over a disused railway and
onto the remains of a millrace. Beyond
some trees is a bridge crossing the River Teifi.
Evidence of Roman remains have been found near the river including a bathhouse. On the other side of the
river, follow the path along the bank heading south to a wooded hillside where
the path rises up through the trees to reach fileds above the buildings and
barns of Godre’r Garth. Here the path
has been diverted to the east and a stile on the left lead into a path that runs
south-west to rejoin the original path.
Follow the route across the fields to the green lane heading up to Garth
and cut right through the farmyard after the farmhouse to reach the farm
lane. This emerges on a lane by some buildings.
Turn right and follow
the lane past more buildings and over a bridge to a junction. Turn left and follow the lane for over a mile
rising up high above the river. A track
is reached on the left by the farm, Wern Fawr.
Follow this across fields with signed stiles to cut through what is
described in the Sarn Helen guide as a ‘scrapyard’. It’s no different 30 years on.
Cross the lane and pick up a path into a field
with a bungalow on the right and, almost opposite the building, is a stile with
a steep drop down into the lower field.
Turn towards the right and drop down to reach a gate leading to Parc
Newydd where the lane is rejoined. Head
south west to Pont Llanfair near Llanfair Clydogau.
Shortly after the shop
and chapel is a footpath on the right which climbs steeply up through fields
and woodland to reach some buildings (Higher Cefnfoelallt).
Follow a track to
join the lane on the ridge then turn left along the lane to a quirky cottage,
Penlan Goetre. Most of the woodland was
cut down giving views to the north.
Follow the signed
paths to the start of Long Wood and up to the area of Castell Goestre. Here the path bears right to a fence with a
track straight ahead and one further down the fence. Take the latter and cross fields before
rising up to reach the woodland by Castell Allt Goch.
Keep the fence to the right and follow it
round anticlockwise to a gate which leads south west alongside a hedge and into
a beech wood. The way down to Lampeter
is clear from here. Over 13 miles.
